 Renascence

11/2/2014

Nov 18, the date which commemorates the establishment of Soka Gakkai by its founder Mr Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. The Hosshaku Kempon website has chosen this significant month to undergo a facelift for a new departure with the mission to share fresh insight on numerous topics through a series of instalments.

While we will continue to monitor and report any injustice inflicted on innocent practitioners or despotic behaviors from the central leaders, it is also our resolve to share contents and materials based on our mentor, President Ikeda’s teaching, to our readers, which are free from manipulation for personal/organizational propaganda.

Hosshaku Kempon’s new mission is guided by the recent President Ikeda’s lecture series, The Teachings for Victory – The Kalpa of Decrease:

1. A true person of wisdom in the Latter Day of the Law must embody not only the great good wisdom of the correct teachings of Buddhism but also be able to detect error, fight against it, and strive earnestly to free people from the hold of false teachings. Nichiren Daishonin stood up as that person to engage in his struggle without begrudging his life.

2. A “worthy ruler” represents a social entity that acknowledges a person with wisdom. Today, in our democratic society, the “worthy ruler” corresponds to be a wise and awakened citizenry.

3. Such a citizenry is vital if a peaceful and prosperous society is to be realised. As people grow wiser and stronger, the ideals of the sanctity of life and the absolute importance of peace will become more widely accepted and established in society.

Hosshaku Kempon website endeavours to unearth more “person of wisdom” through its sharing and as a result, achieve a “wise and awakened citizenry” within the practitioners in Singapore.

Similarly, during Daishonin’s time, the Buddhist Schools had lost sight of the Buddha’s true intent and the fundamental ideals of Buddhism. The clergy of these schools displayed the characteristics of “arrogant priests” and “arrogant false sages”, two of the three powerful enemies. They harbored intense enmity towards the Daishonin, the votary of the Lotus Sutra.

The lay followers of those schools, however, were taken in by the priests’ religious authority and appearance of respectability, and failed to see the true situation. As a result, though they were accumulating good causes through their Buddhist practice, they were in fact, frighteningly enough, steeping themselves in the poison of the law. It was as if the healing medicine that people thought they had been prescribed was actually a toxic substance.

Daishonin indicates that the only way for this situation to be remedied was for a wise person possessing the wisdom of the correct teachings of Buddhism and a worthy ruler to join together to put a stop to this great evil.

A wise person is able to recognize slander of the law committed by the erroneous teachings and discern the true nature of the leaders, combat that evil and restore the ideal of respect for all people that is the original aim of Buddhism. This person, joining together with a worthy ruler possessing excellent powers of judgment concerning right and wrong, worked to repudiate misguided teachings and principles that ultimately cause people’s sufferings. This is the path to genuinely leading people to enlightenment and creating a secure and prosperous society.

Today, as mentioned by President Ikeda, the worthy ruler corresponds to a wise and awakened citizenry. As people grow stronger and wiser, the ideals of sanctity of life and absolute importance of peace will become more widely accepted and established in society. This will lead to more people rejecting self-centered ideas that give rise to discrimination and war, which inflict human suffering.

As President Ikeda’s genuine disciples, we vow to ensure that Buddhism must continue as a teaching that exist to spread far and wide for people’s happiness. That is the very basis.

Therefore, we must take a firm stand against any authoritarian forces that seek to subvert the humanistic ideals of the Nichiren Buddhism!  At this time of the essential phase, we must guard against anyone who tries to turn it into a religion that exists only for its own sake and exploits people for their own ends!

This is the time to cast of the transient and reveal the true – the Hosshaku Kempon of the Ikeda’s Direct Disciples!
