Practising the Spirit of Soka Han of Working Behind the Scene, Expanding Dialogue
Fulfilling the dream of setting up an Arts school, Transforming Financial Difficulties
Huang Zheng Yao
Taiwan
In 2003, I was a second year student in Taiwan Arts Institute but I had no direction in life. My senior, Chen Jian Jun introduced me to the faith. My life began to see a wonderful transformation as I participated in the activities of the organisation.
Fulfilling mission while battling financial difficulties, determined to work toward my profession
I specialised in Art creation and studying in an overseas University has always been my dream. Originally, I planned to go France to pursue an art degree after serving national service. However, my mum suddenly told me that she could not support my overseas education due to financial difficulties and suggested that I stay in Taiwan to work instead. Shaking off my disappointment, I started to look for a job.
For the first few years, I had almost no income at all and largely depended on the family for my daily expenses. At that time, due to my lack of faith, I gave up my dream of pursuing a career in the Arts and worked on jobs which were totally unrelated to what I studied including as a bartender, a magazine reporter and helping out at my family’s stall in the market selling beef, merely hoping to earn a living. I wanted to enrol in a Progressive Oil Painting course but could not afford the course fee. I appealed to the boss to allow me to work as an odd job labourer at the Art Gallery in exchange for my learning but was chased out.
My mother knew about my financial difficulties and secretly stuffed some money to me. I scolded myself in tears in my sleep at night and lamented why I was so useless. On top of this, my mother had a persistent cough and was diagnosed with lung cancer. This was a severe blow to my father who broke down in tears. My siblings wore a worried all day.
Despite such difficult times, I persevered in my practice and Gakkai activities. As the Gosho teaches: “Inconspicuous causes will lead to conspicuous effects.” Be it under the scotching sun or strong cold winds, the Soka Han protect the members with utmost dedication and sincerity. They practised human revolution in the midst of challenging their daily problems and fulfilling their duties. I told myself to actualize the Soka Han spirit of Challenging Behind the Scene in order to accumulate good fortune for my mother as well as to show actual proof of victory.
Once, while I was chanting, these thoughts floated across my mind: Whenever I read Soka News, I love reading the testimonials of other members but why is it that after working so hard, I am still reading the testimonials of others? Basing on the spirit of accepting first and challenging later, I resolved that since drawing is my first love and is also what I was trained from young, why don’t I become an Art teacher? With this change in ichinen, I soon got a job as an assistant art teacher in an Art school. For the next one year or more, I scrimped and saved with what I earned as I received a regular salary of a few thousand dollars. I was very grateful to the Gohonzon and my self-confidence grew.
With the protection from Buddhist gods, my mother was admitted to the hospital and was fortunate to be under the care of a medical team led by a surgeon who is a specialist in lung diseases. A tumour of the size of a human fist was removed and the doctors commented that it was a miracle as a tumour that big, if burst, would have dire consequences. I could deeply feel the power of the Gohonzon and my conviction deepened and as I exerted more vigorously in my Gakkai mission, I also started to experience breakthroughs in my financial situation.
In 2010, I obtained additional income from my roles as an oil painting tutor in the music faculty at the University and as a private tutor of Taipei Mei Jiao Music group in 2011. Moreover, I was employed by Ban Qiao Art school whose educational philosophy was what I could very much identify with. My dinner was fully paid for and I was paid three times as much as before. With this improvement in my financial situation, I could fulfil my mission in Gakkai without worries. At the end of 2011, my salary was raised to 5 times as much as when I was first employed! I could not find words to describe my feelings of gratitude.
However, I did not rest on my laurels. My dream was to set up my own art school to inculcate and spread the educational philosophy of Soka Education. I hope that my students could learn painting with joy and this school would become a Buddha land of friendship and happiness. With the great support from my parents, my Art school officially opened on 20 May 2012, thus fulfilling my childhood dream. At the moment, it is developing steadily. Furthermore, in the middle of September 2013, I received a call from my friend who recommended me to register for the post of a travelling arts teacher under the Ministry of Education Special Education centre. With strong resolute prayers, I successfully secured the necessary qualification for the job and subsequently worked as a relief arts teacher in a primary school. At the start of 2014, I also returned to my previous job as an oil painting private tutor at the request of the founder of Ban Qiao Art school as he liked my teaching methods very much. On May and December of the same year, I helped this founder organised two Oil Painting exhibitions with great success! Now, I have assignments and projects to look forward to every day and was no longer the jobless painter I used to be. Thanks to the Gohonzon, protection of the Buddhist gods and the support of my parents, I have won!
Strive toward the goal of expansion, mum’s illness under control
However, just as my career was getting back on track, the storm of karma stealthily launched its assault on my family. My mother’s cancer had a relapse and she underwent several rounds of chemotherapy to fight the sickness. I felt very sad and pained at this turn of events. I could only rely on daimoku and turned karma to mission. I rallied my family to fight my mother’s sickness and encouraged them to take faith. Now, my mother has stopped chemotherapy treatment, her condition was stable and her complexion is improving by the day.
In June 2014, in order to achieve my dialogue expansion targets and accumulate more good fortune, I resolved to achieve these targets in half a year. I started to talk to my relatives and friends about Buddhism but it was not a smooth sailing journey. Almost all my friends declined to attend the discussion meetings. But I was not discouraged. This is because I am a Soka Han and I will courageously and vigorously face all obstacles with the spirit of a Soka Youth and win wherever I go!
I set a personal target of chanting at least one hour of daimoku per day and after studying the Soka Publication “The Youthful Leader’s Determination to Victory”, I deepened my resolve to conduct dialogues. Soon after, I managed to contact friends whom I have lost touch for more than 20 years or at times, I would even bump into friends on the streets and dialogue just followed. I am thankful for my comrades who accompanied me for the home visits to new believers. A total of 4 new friends took faith and formed a connection with the Gohonzon by the end of this year. Another breakthrough this year was that my father who used to be strongly against group chanting in our house changed his stance. I am determined to continue to build on the strong momentum of last year and home visit all my members and new believers in my chapter for the sake of their happiness.
Thankful of the warm encouragement of the Soka family, resolve to establish faith for a harmonious family
As the Gosho teaches,” All phenomena in society are the real aspects of all phenomena.” In my career, I will continue to face each challenge with the spirit of the Soka Han. For the sake of my parents’ good health and for them to take faith, I vow to deepen my faith, practice and study. I will repay my gratitude to the Gohonzon and my parents by fighting for kosen-rufu. The sun of Nichiren Buddhism must shine on my family and there will be capable people for kosen-rufu emerging from my family.
As Mr Ikeda said,” With faith, there will be no deadlock in life. No matter how it may appears on the surface, from a long term perspective of life, fundamentally, we will move in the best possible direction. That is why all Soka Gakkai members will become the happiest people.” I am very grateful to my seniors in faith of Shuang He district and the support of my fellow leaders for their warm words of encouragement and concern so that I was not alone while I was challenging my problems. To have faith is great and Soka Gakkai is wonderful! I resolve that from now on, I will chant at least one hour of daimoku per day, become a capable person in both my career and for kosen-rufu, to promote dialogue in my district, expand the ranks of the youth division and to guide my family to take faith so that we can build a harmonious family.
