Terminal Stage Ovary Cancer Defeated (末期卵巢癌痊愈)
Midori Taniyama
Japan
Beginning of the Struggle
In early April 2002, 51 year old Midori Taniyama, a Women division assistant district chief felt uncomfortable from a bloating stomach and began to experience sharp pains. She immediately went for a medical check-up at a hospital run by Red Cross. MRI scan images revealed a white patch over her womb and ovaries.
The doctor pointed at the white patch and said,“I am quite certain that this is cancerous and it is not at the early stage. It is very likely that the cancer cells have spread to other organs.”
The doctor requested that Midori be immediately admitted to hospital.
Upon returning home from hospital, Midori sat in front of the Gohonzon. As the “sun of the family”, Midori never forgot to wear a smile no matter what happens.
It was the same on this day. Speaking to her husband who returned home from work, she spoke with great determination,”The doctor said that I seem to have contracted cancer, but nothing will happen to me!
She was admitted on 22 April, but it did not occur to her that she would stay in the hospital for the next 253 days! The next morning, she went through a series of tests: Blood tests, CT Scan,Gastroscopy etc.
When all the tests were completed that night, while lying on the bed, she asked with tears rolling down her face,” Why me?”
At this moment, Midori wrote with great resolve in her diary,“I will definitely not die! I must chant daimoku to change the impossible to possible.”
The doctor informed her husband of his wife’s condition,” Your wife has terminal stage ovary cancer.” He wanted him to be mentally prepared.
Husband Took Faith
Midori took faith in Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism in 1965 at the age of 15. She was greatly influenced by the strong conviction of her mother and began to participate in Gakkai activities actively. Her seniors in Young Women Division once explained to her the meaning of karma. As she had liver problems, she participated actively in activities for kosen-rufu in order to transform her karma. She also read aloud the Gosho passage,”Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion, what illness can it not overcome? (Reply to Kyo-o, GZ, P1169)
She also challenged herself in chanting daimoku and delivered Seikyo Shimbun newspaper daily for many years. Through this, she became stronger and healthier, thus strengthening her conviction of faith.
Deep faith in the Gohonzon and the conviction gained through years of practicing faith like water supported Midori’s fight against the cancer.
On 10 May, in order to ascertain the extent of the spread of cancer cells, the doctor performed an operation on her abdomen, lasting 8 hours. Tumours of the size of big beans had spread to her womb, lymph nodes and her liver. The doctor also removed her left and right ovaries. To remove the remaining cancerous cells, she began chemotherapy.
After a period of chemotherapy treatment, she experienced intense vomiting and felt extreme fatigue. The nurses had to massage her back and spine while she lay on the bed. She started to develop ulcers in her mouth and lose her sense of taste. She also lost 6 kg and her hair began to fall off.
She tied her hair with a scarf and she showed it proudly to the nurses that this scarf was bought by her very busy son who had to work 3 shifts in his job. Her husband who worked in Hiroshima, also made it a point to take express buses to visit her and encourage her regularly.
Midori prayed deeply that her husband would start to practise this faith seriously using her battle with this sickness as a cause. One day, she asked her husband,” Can you pray for my sake that the cancer will disappear? Her words shook her husband to the core. Although he took up faith after marriage, he has never chanted to the Gohonzon since then. On that very day, he began to chant seriously for her recovery.
Midori thought to herself,” I have been praying for the whole family to take up faith, how can I be defeated at this very moment? I must completely eradicate the cancer cells!” She chanted with dead seriousness, sending each daimoku to each drop of medicine that is used in the Chemotherapy treatment. The members in her district chanted for her and folded one thousand paper cranes, written with words of encouragement.
Dreams Fulfilled
In the course of Chemotherapy, she had difficulty breathing, itching in the limbs and bloating at times. At other times, her white blood cells count declined so drastically that the treatment had to be delayed.
In the fifth month of hospitalisation in early autumn, her doctor told her excitedly,”The cancer cells which spread to the liver have vanished!” The tumour which spread to the entire womb has shrunk in size as well.
Finally in early October, Midori had an operation to remove her womb and lymph nodes.
Midori held strongly to the belief “I can definitely transform my karma! I can definitely fully recover!”
She chanted more vigorously. After the operation, she continued with 4 rounds of chemotherapy totally 12 times. She was discharged from hospital at last on 31 December! When she returned home and faced the Gohonzon, tears flowed continuously from her eyes,” I have come back with victory! As an indescribable sense of gratitude well forth from her life, she was at a loss for words.
Thereafter, she continued to battle against the constant worry of a relapse and she treasured each day of her life even more as a result.
After the discharge from hospital, her son’s family moved back to live with them. Her daily routine included fetching her two grandsons to and from schools. Meanwhile, her husband also gradually began to participate in Gakkai activities.
In one discussion meeting, her husband read eloquently the introduction to Daibyakurenge while Midori performed the harmonica, something which she learnt after her discharge from hospital.
On 3 September 2012, the doctor announced that Midori has completely recovered! She was extremely happy and she cried out in her heart,” I have won! We have won through the collective faith of our family!”
As the assistant Women district chief, Midori now diligently pays home visits to members in her district. With great conviction and confidence, she gives hope and lights up the heart of her members by relating her painful experiences battling cancer and how she won over them.
