The Life I Wanted
Qiu Hong Cai
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
In the year 1986, my ex-colleague tried to introduce me to Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. Due to the act of brutality and killing of the innocence by the Japanese Army during World War II, I rejected his goodwill with this sense of hatred.
A few years later, I met my wife-to-be, who was then my girlfriend. She was a member of the Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) and tried to convert me to this faith, but was also rejected by me. However, she persisted in sharing the greatness of this practice to me. Due to the fact that I was wooing her at that time, I continued to listen to her sharing.
After my graduation, I went to work in Singapore. I missed my family and hometown very much. This lonesome feeling was aggravated by my unfriendly and arrogant colleagues. Life to me, was painful and lonely at that point in time. I asked myself repeatedly, “what sort of the life do I really want”
3 months later, I resigned from my job and returned to my hometown. Knowing my predicament and unhappiness at work, my girlfriend said to me, “Why don’t you chant? It is free to chant and you could stop if you do not see any results. The power of the Gohonzon is mystical, and the key is profound and serious prayers without doubt.” In my heart, I was asking myself, “Is this practice really so amazing?”
With her persistence, I finally started chanting in the year 1990, silently in a small room with windows tightly closed. 2 weeks later, I saw the difference in myself. I became more optimistic, with the ability to see matters from different angles. At that time, I took a bus to the Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Kuala Lumpur culture center at Imbi Road to chant for more than 4 hours daily. Slowly and steadily, I gained clarity of my path for the future.
Shortly later, I applied for the position of a technical staff in a multi-national electronic company and was admitted to the job. In this new company, I was able to establish my career smoothly. Every time I encountered a challenge, I would chant to the Gohonzon, read SGI President Ikeda’s guidance. I would also seek guidance from the SGM leaders.
I was filled with gratitude that I was able to make new friends from different backgrounds in life. The performance at the South East Asian Games put up by SGM in the year 1999 was very moving, and it exceeded my imagination. Every participant in the performance was voluntarily performing, which changed my perception of “there was no free lunch in this world”. With the continued efforts of my girlfriend, I deepened my understanding of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. From then on, I joined in more SGM activities, and also joined the video group within SGM.
In the year 1998, together with my wife, we joined the “mass card display” performance in the 16th Commonwealth Games. We were required to wake up 4 a.m. every morning to participate in the training, which was a real test of faith and endurance. In the midst of training, we made mistakes at times, but we always mutually encouraged and supported each other.
In the year 2007, I participated in the National Day performance, and in the year 2010, our entire family participated in a “Friendship with Our Neighbors” performance. Embracing the spirit of itai-doshin, we practiced towards the common goal of great, successful performance. This is for the sake of SGM and kosen-rufu, not just for personal sake. Because of SGM, I felt the immense gratitude of being a performer.
My Human Revolution
I was the youngest in the family, the most cherished child of my parents. I was irritable and selfish before, kept thinking that I was right all the time while those around me were always wrong. At work, I was unable to get along well with my colleagues, reprimanding them whenever they made mistakes or could not help. At home, I also chided at my family members, not allowing them a chance to explain matters. All of them felt the stress, cautiously avoiding making mistakes.
My wife had a chat with me, hoping that I could change my attitude by chanting daimoku.
One day, she told me that I had stopped scolding people, including my own family members. I became more jovial, and easier to communicate with others. My colleagues acknowledged that I could accept their opinions and gave them the necessary support. I will continue to improve my own attitude through my own human revolution.
My Son’s Sickness
One day in year 2005, my 8 years old son, Zheng Xian, complained of severe headache when he came home. The headache persisted along with bouts of fever even after medication and rest. We bought him to the pediatrician, but he started to vomit the next day. We were extremely worried.
The doctors performed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the brain and discovered that he has a tumor the size of a golf ball which pressed on his nerves, causing the severe pain. An urgent operation was needed.
We were shocked, and could not believe that a normal, healthy boy could become critically ill. Deep in our hearts, we are determined that he must recover no matter what.
My wife informed a SGM leader about the situation of my son. Immediately, she organized special chanting sessions to pray for the success of the operation. We were touched by her thoughtfulness.
It was not a simple operation. In this high-risk operation which could last between 6 to 8 hours, if the doctors damaged any of the brain’s arteries and veins, Zheng Xian would have to bear the consequences and abnormalities of the damage permanently. In spite of this, we agreed to proceed with the operation.
After 6.5 hours of chanting and anxious waiting, the operation was a success. But in a week later, the doctors told us another bad news that the tumor was cancerous and further treatments were required.
We tried other alternative methods to fight the cancer, but after 3 months, it was all futile and his conditions worsened. Due to the re-appearance of the brain tumor, he was unable to sleep, walk and vomit all the times.
Another pediatrician did a brain scan, only to discover a bigger tumor at the same position of the previous one, and this time, it was in the cerebellum and required an urgent 2nd operation.
A week before the 2nd operation, my wife and me put all other matters aside, and chanted single-mindedly for the success of the operations, so that Zheng Xian could grow and become a capable person for kosen-rufu. The SGM members organized marathon chanting sessions, and the youth leaders visited and encouraged him at the hospital, “You are a great and mighty general. Now you are starting your battle, and will definitely achieve victory in the battlefield.”
The doctor predicted that 8 hours would be required for the operation. However, it only took 4 hours for the tumor to be successfully removed. When we visited Zheng Xian, he was already awoken. He said, “Mum, the Gohonzon is really great. Our prayer that I would not be in coma is realized. See, I have already woken up.” We were all touched by his great fighting spirit and the strength of his life-force.
After the operation, Zheng Xian was healthy and lively, without any differences with any other child. Our friends and SGM members were surprised and remarked that he did not looked like a child who had undergone a brain operation.
Before leaving the hospital, the doctor said, “This operation is different from the first one. Your conditions have great improvement this time.” Deep within our hearts, we understood that it was the single-minded prayer that allowed us to overcome all adversities.
These 2 operations cost us 50,000 Malaysian ringgits. The insurance I bought covered half the cost, while my company covered for the other half. It was due to my superior’s self-initiated support, the management had finally agreed on covering the other half of the operations’ cost.
Following this, we want to give the best form of treatment for our child. A tumor specialist from a private hospital suggested that we seek further treatment at the children’s tumor department of University of Malaysia Medical Centre. He wrote a letter explaining the conditions of our son and also personally contacted the professor-in-charge. The professional accomplishment and extensive experience of the professor gave us tremendous hope. What was really hard to come by was that the entire course of treatment was free.
Zheng Xian went through 33 times of highly intensive radiotherapy, which resulted in side effects like dropping of hairs, IQ retardation and growth imbalance. In later stages, he had also gone through 6 times of chemotherapy, where he experienced effects of vomiting and numbness of the body.
We chanted and prayed that the doctor would apply effective treatment for our son, and that all the cancer cells in the body would be completely destroyed. We wanted this to be an experience of “changing poison into medicine”.
A Healthy, Normal Boy
In spite of missing classes for a year, and in addition of IQ retardation, our son had achieved 3rd in class and 110th in position of his entire cohort of 400 over Primary 4 students, as well as the award of model student from his teachers.
We sincerely prayed that our son, Zheng Xian and our daughter, En Cheng to become capable people for kosen-rufu, manifesting wisdom to overcome their difficulties. In actual fact, Zheng Xian had achieved it. During his Primary 6, he chanted 10 minutes of daimoku everyday. As a result, he scored ‘A’s in 5 subjects of his UPSR exam. Currently, he is a Secondary 5 student who participated actively in SGM activities and is also a member of the Future Division’s Rainbow Choir.

In the past 20 over years of practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, I now had a successful career, a stable income, and a happy and blissful family where every member of the family is participating actively in SGM activities. I vow to dedicate my entire life to the noble action of propagating the Mystic Law for the sake of the happiness of the common people!
