Translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun, based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, with universal value and application
A passage from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin says: “The situation is like the joints in a piece of bamboo: if one joint is ruptured, then all the joints will split.”* One single courageous breakthrough generates irresistible momentum. That, in fact, is the formula for victory!
The extent to which we put the leg work in to visit others is the extent to which our hearts and minds communicate better with each other. The extent to which we meet and talk with others is the extent to which we foster and develop even deeper friendships. Today again, let’s do all that we can to encourage our friends and fellow members by making every effort to go and visit them!

It’s the indomitable invincible spirit to struggle against adversity that opens up a path to future victories. The Daishonin encourages us, "When great evil occurs, great good follows.”* By chanting daimoku with absolute unshakable conviction, let's continue to cheerfully move forwards!
When the weather is unsettled, please be as considerate as possible about elderly members' attendance, (thinking how we can support them, or if they rather should stay at home, etc.). Let’s make sure, as "leaders", to put our fellow members' safety at the top of our priorities!
The very heart of Nichiren Buddhism lies in us taking action. Whatever the action required, let’s always try to be courageous and make that first step. So now, may the challenge commence!
Being in difficult, trying times offers us the opportunity to propel our lives forwards and change. The Daishonin reminds us with the words, “winter always turns to spring.”* With absolute conviction in our hearts, let’s earnestly and resolutely chant to overcome whatever challenges we face.
At the heart of human diplomacy lie the virtues of sincerity, wisdom and courage. Let’s cultivate and expand our bonds of trust with others in the place where we are, the place of our own personal mission!
Let’s live our lives with strong and powerful conviction! “Nichiren’s disciples cannot accomplish anything if they are cowardly.” Let’s boldly plunge into our challenges with the resolve to win "no matter what!"
