Let us return to the passage from “On Persecutions Be-falling the Sage” and the key statement, “Each of you should summon up the courage of a lion king.” Of crucial importance here are the words “summon up.” Each of us inherently possesses the heart of a lion king.
Summoning it forth is the direct path to happiness. As the Daishonin indicates when he says, “Nichiren’s followers are like roaring lions” (WND, 997), it is the roar of the lion that enables us to bring forth the heart of a lion king in our own lives.
He is saying that we can raise the lion’s roar for justice, just like the mentor. This is the path whereby the disciple becomes one with the mentor, and the lion’s cub becomes a lion king. This principle is described in the “Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings.”
