Herein lies the main cause of the great persecutions of the Latter Day. Because the roots of that cause are deep, the persecutions that arise from them are very obstinate. The Lotus Sutra explains these great persecutions arising after Shakyamuni’s passing as taking the form of attacks by the “three powerful enemies.”
The Daishonin undertook a struggle to spread the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day, fully realizing that in doing so he would have to engage in a fierce battle with devilish functions. The more tenaciously we struggle, the more devilish functions vie to obstruct us. In the end, the Daishonin called forth all of the three powerful enemies, which arose exactly as predicted in the Lotus Sutra, and steadfastly persevered in his efforts.
