The Daishonin focuses in particular on the three powerful enemies that are described in the 20-line verse of the “Encouraging Devotion” chapter of the Lotus Sutra.
He caused all of the three powerful enemies to reveal themselves and sought to eternalize the Mystic Law. In other words, he completely defeated the evil functions that emerged to destroy the correct teaching, and laid the foundation for “ensuring that the Law will long endure.”
Of the three powerful enemies, the third, priests who are revered as saints, is the most powerful. The Great Teacher Miao-lo of China says that the third is “increasingly difficult to recognize,” indicating that it is hard to identify because it deceives everyone by affecting a pious or saintly appearance. For precisely this reason, it is important to expose its real nature to the people. If recognition of this nature is confined to a limited group of people, then society will not change.
Therefore, the only way is for a person whose eyes are open to initiate action to smoke out the third powerful enemy. It is by fighting against and defeating the greatest devilish nature that we can open the way for people to attain Buddhahood in the Latter Day of the Law.
