It is the lot of people living in the Latter Day of the Law to be swept along from one conflict to the next as if caught in a raging torrent. The only way to stop this cycle is for people to bring forth their Buddha nature. Therefore, manifesting the world of Buddhahood is the most fundamental path to peace. The Daishonin was engaged in a struggle to make this a sure and eternal path for all, and we of the SGI are carrying on his work.

The purpose of all our activities is world peace and the happiness of people everywhere. This is kosen-rufu. It is my hope and wish that young successors will further expand and extend the path I have opened, traveling to the farthest corners of the earth as emissaries of happiness. If we accept this people-centered perspective as the Daishonin’s point of departure and the foundation of his concept of “peace of the land,” then the logical result of establishing the “peace of the land” is world peace. Making the land peaceful means realizing peace.

The Daishonin always made the happiness of the people his top priority. If one’s actions are based on the Lotus Sutra, which teaches the enlightenment of all living beings, people inevitably become one’s primary focus.
President Toda once said: “When we take a broad perspective, we can see that such things as national polity and political power change from one age to the next according to the will of the people. If we allow ourselves to be distracted by things that are so inconstant and neglect to shine light on the people themselves, then the work of kosen-rufu—the task of transforming this strife-ridden society into a land of tranquil light—will definitely not be accomplished.” Mr. Toda had keen insight. Unless we continually focus on the people, kosen-rufu will not advance. Humanity will forever remain shrouded in darkness, caught in a vicious cycle of unhappiness and misery.
Let us bear this deeply in mind.
That is why the core of activities for kosen-rufu is making steady efforts to share the Daishonin’s teaching with one person after another. How great is this endeavor we are carrying out each day to create a wonderful and solid history!

To remonstrate means to lodge a protest against a person wielding absolute power or authority. One cannot take on authorities without a fierce determination to face even life-threatening persecution. It is with this spirit that the Daishonin took the action he did. He simply couldn’t suppress his desire to relieve people of their suffering.
