Justice means speaking out openly and with composure when the time is right. Also, to do so is true compassion. Should we fail to speak out when the time demands, then we will be too late. The opportunity cannot be reclaimed. I think it was for this reason that the Daishonin made a series of appeals to the regime in rapid succession.

Following precepts that do not accord with the time or with people’s capacity is sure to result in duplicity. This is because people accept such troublesome rules for nothing more than show and in so doing may only conceal and abet evil within.
In everything he did, the Daishonin was motivated by the desire to open the way to attaining Buddhahood and the way to happiness for all people. Let us continue to win in our struggle for kosen-rufu, filled with a sense of appreciation for the Daishonin’s acts of immense compassion and dauntless courage.
The full-fledged appearance of the third of the three powerful enemies occurred in connection with the Tatsunokuchi Persecution and Sado Exile (1271). It was during these persecutions that the three powerful enemies, among which the third kind—arrogant false sages — played a central role, conspired to enact a terrible and great repression.
