The Daishonin writes: “Deploying weak soldiers in the first round of an attack only serves to increase the strength of a powerful adversary” (GZ, 37). In other words, if we underestimate our opponents and allow them to defeat us in the initial stages of a battle, they will grow more formidable.
Precisely because the struggle is a matter of such crucial importance, the lion king takes on each opponent with every ounce of his energy, even when those around him feel that he need not make such an all-out effort.
