The Daishonin says that the word think in the phrase “At all times I think to myself ” means the “single thought that the Buddhas and all other beings originally possess” (Gosho Zenshu, p. 1368). It is the thought originally and equally inherent in the lives of the Buddha and ordinary people alike. The desire to become happy together with others is the pure and eternal wish of all people. It is the “original spirit” functioning in the depths of our lives. One who is awakened to and who lives in accord with this spirit is a Buddha. The Daishonin lived out his life with this wish, this ideal, this hope.
