The Daishonin’s lofty spirit was beyond the comprehension of such people. Judging the situation with their own craven minds, those priests surmised that the Daishonin must be trying to ingratiate himself with the powerful just as they were doing. Because of the darkness of their own hearts, they feared the Daishonin, who had neither status nor power, and persecuted him both covertly and overtly. Evil people fear their own shadows. This is true today as well. Those who groundlessly slander a person of justice are only projecting their own evil deeds and spreading false rumors accordingly. But even in the face of continuous persecution, the Daishonin did not retreat a single step. He resolutely fought the negative forces that threatened to plunge the people into suffering.
